Ketchikan, Alaska’s first city, has been dubbed the Salmon capital of the world. It spreads out along 23 miles of Inside passage waterfront with the City being in between the North and South of the Gateway Borough. We have a population of approximately 13,477 within the entire city and borough limits. This number can increase by as many as 10,000 on the streets of Ketchikan on a busy cruise ship day during our summer tourist season.
Our economy is based on commercial fishing and tourism. We also have US Coast Guard Station, Ketchikan, which sees many families come through with family members protecting our country’s freedom. The United States Forest Service has a large presence In Ketchikan as well.
Ketchikan is a historic city which has the world’s largest collection of standing totem poles which are in many locations such as the Saxman Totem Park, Totem Bight State Park, The Heritage Center and Potlatch Park. Also historic is Creek Street, where you can walk on the boardwalk from the original “Red Light” district and visit the “Original Dolly’s House” as well as visit the stores that have art and items from our local citizens.
We get A LOT of rain!!!!!! Typically about 199 inches a year with the wettest year being 202.55 inches in 1949. And the recorded high temperature was 89 degrees in 1958 but I am pretty sure that up from the water we have been at least ten degrees higher than that.
I thought when I moved here that the rain might bother me but it only makes the sun soaked, beautiful green hikes all the more appreciated. We live in beautiful country that not a lot of other people ever get to live in or appreciate. We are blessed with great neighbors and wonderfully maintained trails that we can all enjoy. I have attached a link to the local hiking trails that I hope that you will find useful when you move to our community.

We have local media and radio here as well. The radio stations KRBD, KFMJ, KGTW and KTKN are found on air in Ketchikan. The Ketchikan Daily News is our local Daily Paper. The Local Paper puts out a publication once a week, on Wednesdays which includes ads for sale, services, and many other items.
The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Recreation Center offers many opportunities for individuals and families. The Aquatic center has a family pool with slides and a play center for smaller children. There is also a competition pool for the Lap Swims as well as for The Ketchikan Swim Teams. An outside play area offers space for safe play for smaller children.
The Rec center also has a fitness room, weight room, elipticals, treadmills and other cardio equipment. If you have small children they have a playroom during the day that you can check them into while you partake in your chosen workout.
I have lived in many different communities in SE Alaska and have found that with the exception of spending time at my remote cabin at Angoon, Ketchikan is a most fantastic place to be. Good people, great schools and a great environment.
